The salt fog hung heavy over the timber docks of Blackwood Harbor when I finally turned my pickup onto the gravel driveway. For sixteen months as a deep-water cable technician aboard a North Atlantic repair vessel, I had kept this house alive in my memory. I had pictured the warm glow of oil lanterns behind the cedar shutters, the savory steam of clam chowder on the stove, and my wife Evelyn leaning against the porch railing while our children chased our golden retriever across the tide grass. That vision had sustained me through freezing night shifts and violent offshore gales.
Yet when I killed the engine, no light greeted me. The porch lantern was dark, its glass casing shattered and filled with cobwebs. The scent hanging in the damp coastal air was not firewood or pine smoke, but the flat, stale stench of mildew and uncollected rain. The sea grass along the path had grown wild and tangled around the doorframe. Before I could even slide my key into the brass lock, the front door rattled from within. A frantic, scratching sound was followed by a low, desperate whine.
