Chapter One: A Wedding Meant to Be Admired

The Black family has always cared deeply about decency. They love shiny shoes, expensive watches, flawless family photos, and statements that make them sound richer and kinder than they actually are. So when Kevin Black announced that he was marrying Serena Winston, the only daughter of a Manhattan hotel magnate, his parents acted like they had just won a national award.

The wedding took place at the Winston Royal Hotel. The place is famous for its marble floors, towering gilded doors, and crystal chandeliers so bright they make every guest feel twice as valuable. Matilda Blake moved about the halls as if she owned the place.

Her husband, George, followed her, shaking hands with various business figures and relatives, proudly repeating the same words over and over.

“Our Kevin is destined to do great things.”

But no one has ever commented on Emma like this. That morning, Emma arrived early with her daughter Lucy. She wore a minimalist dark gray dress and carried an old, twice-repaired clutch. Lucy wore a light pink tulle skirt with a ribbon tied at the back. She looked like a little angel, nervous and excited.

Kevin asks Lucy to be the ring bearer at the wedding. Emma was very surprised. Her brother rarely involved her in anything important. But Lucy was so happy that Emma agreed.

“She picked out the shoes she was going to wear today three days ago,” Emma said to Kevin when they arrived.

Kevin didn’t even look at them.

“Just make sure she doesn’t embarrass me,” he said.

Emma should have sensed something was wrong then. But she has given her family too many times in her life tolerance that they did not deserve.
