The Vessel Audit
On the eve of a crucial historical preservation audit, maritime restorer Evelyn Vance discovers a ruthless plot by her husband and his sister to destroy her vessel audit and forge a property withdrawal.
Fictional story. Contains themes of marital betrayal, emotional manipulation, arson, and financial deception.Chapter 1: The Ash and Timber
The smell of aged heartwood oak, cedar oil, and sea salt always settled over the Baybrook Maritime Yard as dusk turned to night. For three years, I had poured every hour of my life into restoring the Albatross, a rare 1888 coastal schooner anchored in the historic drydock. The vessel was the last surviving piece of Maine’s nineteenth-century timber fleet, and my late uncle Arthur had entrusted the yard to me with a single instruction: keep the craft alive.
Tomorrow morning at nine o’clock, the Regional Heritage Trust would convene at the Baybrook Town Hall. I was scheduled to present my four-hundred-page timber restoration audit, an exhaustive scientific and historical record proving the vessel’s structural integrity and cultural significance. Winning the Trust’s landmark designation would grant the shipyard permanent conservation status and secure a ten-year master restorer contract. It was the culmination of my life’s work as a maritime carpenter and archival conservator.
