The Timber Pass Ledger
Trapped at an isolated Sierra mountain depot under false debt charges, telegraph clerk Clara Vance must team up with a cable mechanic to expose a corrupt timber director before the morning express train leaves.
Fictional story. Contains themes of financial coercion, systemic corruption, and high-altitude danger.Chapter 1: The Telegraph at Timber Pass
The steam engine's whistle cut through the pine fog of Timber Pass, a jagged notch eight thousand feet up in the Sierra Nevada range. Clara Vance adjusted her woolen coat and tightened her grip on her brass-bound leather satchel. Inside lay her cipher key, two bottles of iron-gall ink, and her official credentials as an independent ledger auditor commissioned by the Western Mining Exchange. For three years, Clara had made her living reading the numbers that powerful men tried to hide. She was not easily impressed by regional titans, but as she stepped onto the damp wooden platform of the Ridge Timber Depot, the sheer scale of Caleb Thorne's operation made her pause. Heavy pine trunks hung suspended from iron cables stretched across the canyon, swaying like pendulum weights over the precipice.
Caleb Thorne stood on the depot stairs, flanked by two oversized timber guards. He was a broad man with silver hair cut close to the scalp and eyes as pale and unforgiving as mountain ice. "Miss Vance," he said without offering a hand. "We expected an older man from the Reno board."
