Chapter 1: The Midnight Snowfall

The timber workshop at the foot of Pine Ridge usually smelled of cedar shavings, damp earth, and linseed oil. At eleven o'clock on a freezing November Thursday, the wind coming off the mountain carried the sharp stench of exhaust and unseasonable snow. Hannah Vance turned off the lathe, wiped her palms on her canvas apron, and set her chisel on the workbench. The headlights of a heavy pickup truck flickered across the frosted windows of her display room before dark silence fell over the driveway again.

Hannah opened the heavy oak door. Standing on the sheltered pine porch was her nine-year-old nephew, Toby, clutching an old metal toolbox against his winter coat. Beside him stood a green canvas duffel bag and a plastic milk crate filled with rolled-up architectural sketches. The driveway below was empty; dark tire tracks were already being erased by the falling snow.
