Chapter 1: The Cold Wharf

The salt fog off Alder Bay always had a sharp, metallic edge, but on the evening of October fourteenth, it smelled of diesel and turned milk. I stepped off the coastal inspection vessel Sentinel at six twenty p.m., hauling my duffel bag across the wet planks of the commercial dock. My three-week rotation evaluating lighthouse power grids along the Oregon shoreline was finished, and all I wanted was to sit at our kitchen table while my wife, Moira, drank tea and walked me through her latest hydrographic mapping charts.

Our cedar-shingled cottage sat two miles up North Breakwater Road, tucked behind a stand of Sitka spruce. As I turned onto the gravel driveway, the house was dark save for a single amber porch light swinging in the gusts coming off the Pacific. That was the first anomaly. Moira never left the interior dark when she knew I was returning. She was an eco-system hydrographer for the state board—methodical to a fault, accustomed to keeping strict logs for every tidal cycle.
