Chapter 1: The Cold Wake

The morning light over Oakhaven Bay was the color of scraped slate. Inside the gray-shingled coastal cottage that my father had built forty years ago, the silence felt heavy and clinical. My ribs throbbed with a dull, sickening heat every time I pulled air into my lungs. Three nights earlier, during the peak of a sudden November gale, our survey boat had capsized off the eastern headland, throwing me against the rocky breakwater. I remembered the roar of freezing salt foam, the sickening crack of timber, and then nothing until I woke up in a mainland emergency clinic with IV tubes taped to the back of my hand.

Now, I was back in the cottage, marooned in my childhood bedroom while the storm outside settled into a low, relentless rain. A wooden cane rested against the nightstand, and beside it sat a sleek navy-blue leather folder. My husband, Julian Vance, had placed it there before driving down to the township docks an hour ago. He had kissed my temple with practiced softness, telling me to rest, to leave the tedious paperwork to him, and to remember that everything he did was to protect my fragile condition.
