Chapter 1: The Broken Seal

The heavy brass latch clicked into place with a definitive, metallic ring that seemed to reverberate through the crisp morning salt air. Nora Thorne stood at the bottom of the granite steps outside Vance Maritime Preservation, her fingers numb against the cold handles of a solitary cardboard box. The morning mist hung thick over the wooden piers of Port Sterling, carrying the sharp scent of wet diesel, brine, and pine shavings from the commercial shipyards across the channel.

Inside the box lay her personal drafting instruments—brass calipers, fine-point ink pens, a worn leather-bound sketchbook, and the wooden T-square her father had given her when she enrolled in maritime survey school. Everything else had been left behind. Behind the polished glass doors of the bayfront office, Julian Vance stood with his shoulders squared, resting his hand against the mahogany frame of the lobby counter. Beside him, his sister Helena held a thin manila folder against her chest, her posture rigid and her face entirely devoid of warmth.
