Chapter 1: The Echo of Alder Pier

The salt fog hung heavy over the timber pilings of Alder Creek, drifting in from the Pacific to envelope the historic weather-beaten pier in a blanket of silver grey. Julian Vance adjusted his wool collar against the damp October chill, holding a digital tablet displaying structural stress blueprints. As a senior acoustic and structural engineer, he had been dispatched by Sterling Maritime to issue the final engineering evaluation before the century-old pier was condemned and demolished for a high-density deep-water terminal. For Julian, returning to Alder Creek was a ghost walk. Five years had passed since he had walked away from this coast, believing that his life’s work—and the woman he had loved—had dissolved in professional disgrace and silence.

Inside the cavernous timber warehouse atop the pier, the annual Maritime Harvest Fair was in full swing despite the upcoming demolition order. Local artisans, fishermen, and historians had set up wooden stalls amidst the scent of pine shavings, dry cedar, and salted kelp. Julian walked past displays of hand-woven nets and brass lanterns, his mind focused strictly on verifying timber decay metrics. He told himself that he was here only as an impartial consultant, bound by contract to submit his assessment before sunset.
