Chapter 1: Before the Cracks

Three years earlier, Alana’s life was ordinary in the way that felt sacred. She and Jake lived in a modest townhouse in Silver Spring, Maryland, with creaking floors, an old radiator, and furniture they promised to replace someday.

They had met at Howard University. Jake studied business administration and could charm a room; Alana studied civil engineering and saw the hidden bones that held structures together. He told her he loved the way she always knew where the weight was.

They married two years after graduation and promised to build something beautiful. Jake rose through a real estate development firm while Alana worked as an engineer and built Morrison Construction on weekends.

Then a pregnancy test showed two pink lines. At the ultrasound, one heartbeat became three. Zoe, Marcus, and Amara were coming.

Jake painted the nursery pale yellow and called them three little engineers. Alana laughed and called them pure chaos.

“Our chaos,” Jake said. In those early months, he meant it.
