Chapter 1: The Brass Token

The smell of oil, beeswax, and aged copper always gave David Vance a sense of quiet order. Inside his small restoration workshop in the historic South End of Boston, seconds were physical things—tiny brass teeth clicking against steel palettes, pendulum rods swinging in steady, predictable arcs. Outside, an unexpected late-August rain drummed against the tall glass storefront, blurring the brick townhouses across the street. David turned a forty-year-old mantel clock on his worktable, adjusting his magnification visor as he polished a delicate escapement wheel.

At forty-two, David lived a life measured by patience. He had spent the last eight years building his reputation as one of the few craftsmen in New England capable of restoring eighteenth-century nautical chronometers. He was not a wealthy man, nor did he seek attention. His solitary routine suited him well, broken only by weekend antique expos and quiet evenings reading horological trade journals over dark roast tea.
