Chapter 1: The Silver Cipher

Marcus Sterling adjusted the wooden frame of an antique ledger on his workbench, brushing away a fine layer of sawdust. Outside the high windows of the Pine Creek Historical Museum, afternoon light fell across the dry hills of Eastern Oregon, painting the sagebrush in shades of copper and gold. Pine Creek was a town built on timber and silver rust, a place where people remembered old names and held onto old griefs.

For Marcus, grief had a specific geometry. It was shaped like the small craftsman bungalow on the edge of town, where the second-story study remained untouched, and like the eleven years of his daughter Tess’s life, seven of which had been spent without her mother.
