Chapter One: The Shattered Crystal and the Silver Relic

The Harrington estate glittered beneath crystal chandeliers as the city's donors, executives, and elected officials gathered for the family's annual foundation gala. A string quartet played near the marble staircase, and waiters moved between the guests with silver trays. Sophie Hale, hired through a catering agency for the evening, kept her eyes on her work and tried not to notice how easily certain guests looked through her.

Near the head table, a guest stepped backward without looking and struck Sophie's tray. Champagne spilled across the linen, and several glasses fell onto the marble. Before Sophie could explain, Victoria Harrington turned from her conversation and slapped her across the cheek. The ballroom went silent. Victoria blamed Sophie for embarrassing the family and lifted her hand again, but Richard Harrington caught his wife's wrist before a second blow could land.

Richard was not looking at the broken glass. Sophie's sleeve had slipped back, revealing an old silver bracelet carved with a swallow carrying a rose. His expression changed so abruptly that the guests nearest him stopped breathing. He released Victoria, knelt beside Sophie, and asked where she had found it.

Sophie covered the bracelet with her palm. Her mother, Ella, had given it to her shortly before dying. Ella had remembered little of her childhood after an accident, but she had always insisted that the bracelet belonged to a house with dark wood walls and a rose garden beyond the eastern windows. Sophie had accepted the gala job because the Harrington crest on the invitation resembled the tiny mark inside the bracelet.

At the mention of Ella, Victoria stepped away from the table. Richard's wineglass slipped from his hand and joined the other fragments on the floor. He ordered the music stopped, asked security to clear the ballroom respectfully, and told the catering manager that Sophie was to remain as his guest rather than as an employee under suspicion.

Inside Sophie's apron pocket was a faded instant photograph her mother had guarded for years. Ella had told her to show it only to the person who recognized the bracelet without being prompted. Richard had passed that test, but Victoria's alarm warned Sophie that the photograph was more dangerous than she had imagined. For the moment, she kept it hidden.
