Chapter 1: The Driftwood Chest

Salt spray rattled against the heavy leaded windows of the coastal restoration workshop in Cape Haven as gale-force gusts swept across the rocky sound. Clara Sterling stood over her oak workbench, carefully polishing the copper foil along the edge of a restored cathedral glass panel. The autumn storm had been building since twilight, driving roaring whitecaps against the granite breakwater and filling the studio with the low, persistent vibration of wind and tide. Clara wiped her brow with the back of her wrist, her hands stained with iron oxide and linseed oil, wishing for a moment of quiet in the long, turbulent night.

The heavy entrance door suddenly swung open with a hollow thud, admitting a gust of freezing mist and the sharp smell of sea foam. Her husband, Marcus, stepped across the threshold, his oiled canvas coat drenched and dripping onto the pine floorboards. He was out of breath, his face flushed red from the biting offshore wind. Wrapped in a heavy rope harness behind him was a massive, weathered sea chest bound in tarnished iron bands, its waterlogged timber scraping heavily across the sill as he dragged it inside.
