Fictional story. Depicts family estrangement, pediatric respiratory illness management, corporate ethical conflict, and legal disputes.Chapter 1: The Salvage Shop
The salt-crusted brass bell above the heavy door of Maritime Exchange & Salvage chimed as a gust of coastal wind shoved the weathered pine frame inward. Julian Sterling pulled his dark oilskin coat tighter around his shoulders against the damp fog drifting off the docks of Harbor Reach. He had driven down to the timber yard to inspect a shipment of salvaged Douglas fir beams intended for a structural restoration project across the bay, expecting nothing more than the familiar scent of seasoned wood, copper polish, and diesel exhaust.
Instead, his boots clicked against the worn floorboards as he paused behind a display of salvaged brass lanterns, drawn by a child’s earnest voice coming from the rear counter.
