Chapter 1: The Weight of Vellum

The restoration basement of the Oakhaven Maritime Museum smelled perpetually of damp slate, clove oil, and the sharp mineral tang of Atlantic rain creeping through subterranean stone joints. Outside, grey swells broke against the Maine shoreline, throwing fine mist against high arched windows. Maeve Vance adjusted her illuminated lens over a sixteenth-century ship’s log, her camel-hair brush tracing faded iron-gall ink with rhythmic care. At thirty-one, she had spent a decade learning that paper possessed a memory far more stubborn than the people who wrote upon it.

A heavy step echoed down the iron staircase, carrying a scent that did not belong in the vault—expensive cedarwood cologne, dry and crisp, devoid of salt air.
