Chapter 1: The Midnight Ledger

The first notification from the maritime trust vault did not arrive with a scream. It arrived as a low, persistent vibration against the polished walnut of my restoration desk, cutting through the heavy quiet of my timber barn workshop at twelve minutes past one in the morning.

Outside, the salt air of coastal Connecticut moved through the pines bordering Mystic Harbor. The workshop smelled of linseed oil, aged teak, and the cold iron shavings of a nineteenth-century ship stove I had spent three weeks conserving. I had stayed late to apply a final coat of wax, wrapped in my heavy wool work jacket, enjoying the solitary rhythm that had sustained my family’s conservation practice for two generations.
