Chapter 1: The Frost on the Glass

The aroma of oiled mahogany, beeswax, and crisp coastal pine filled the grand conservatory of the Vance Heritage Estate. Outside, a sharp October wind rattled the diamond-paned windows along the Maine coastline, brushing sea fog against the glass. Inside, brass chandeliers bathed forty board members, preservationists, and family members in a warm golden glow. Glass flutes of champagne clinked, string quartets echoed soft waltzes from the mezzanine, and guests gathered around display cases filled with antique compasses and drafting instruments.

It was the golden anniversary of the Vance Heritage Trust. For my nine-year-old daughter Clara and six-year-old Maeve, the evening was meant to be a rare glimpse into the craft their grandfather had spent a lifetime building. Clara stood beside the central display case, her fingers tucked behind her back, her eyes shining as she admired a century-old boxwood slide rule. Maeve clutched a tiny brass measuring tape in her coat pocket, her shoes polished to a bright shine.
