Chapter 1: The Golden Haze

Clara Vance believed in the permanence of stone and soil. For twelve years after her husband’s death, she had managed Vance Ridge Apiary alone, tending forty acres of clover, buckwheat, and wild sumac tucked into the eastern slope of the Catskill Mountains. Her honeys won blue ribbons at the county fair, and her small bottling operation kept the roof repaired and her daughter’s school clothes bought. The farm was small, hard-won, and entirely hers.

Or so she thought until the crisp morning late in August, when Julian Vance stepped out of the fog carrying a leather briefcase and an easy smile. Julian was her late husband’s cousin—a former commercial land broker who spoke in fluent corporate jargon and carried the polished charm of a man who had never cleared a clogged irrigation line in his life.
