“Who allowed an ordinary contractor into my private reception?” Carter demanded as every guest turned toward Marcus.
To Carter, humiliation was another way to display power. He ordered security to remove Marcus’s invitation and made him stand alone beside the champagne table while the guests watched.
Carter waved a check. “Sign a statement saying the audit found nothing, and I may let your consulting company work in this city again. Refuse, and I will make sure no client hires you.”
He started a livestream, certain that public pressure would force Marcus to surrender. Instead, each threat became another piece of evidence. Marcus calmly touched the alert button inside his pocket. His tablet lit up, revealing authorized copies of the estate’s surveillance records and the company’s hidden financial accounts.
Carter did not notice that the ballroom screens had changed. Then his recorded orders to exclude qualified employees and hide payments from auditors appeared before every guest. Marcus had entered through the service corridor because the invitation was part of a controlled integrity test. Investigators wanted to know whether Carter would repeat, in front of witnesses, the threats already documented in private emails. He did more than repeat them; he broadcast them himself.
Marcus returned to the ballroom after the evidence team finished. Without music and flattery, it was only an expensive room full of empty glasses. He switched off the livestream Carter had begun and left the final judgment to the court record.
