Chapter 1: The Moving Van and the Iron Bars

The afternoon sun glistened over the manicured hedges and rolling hills of the Vance estate in Beverly Hills—a sanctuary of peace and privacy that had belonged to the family matriarch, Evelyn Vance, for over four decades. But today, the tranquility of the lush gardens was shattered by a blonde woman's shrill, echoing scream.

"You are destroying this family!"

Chloe Vance, Evelyn’s entitled daughter-in-law, was violently shaking the heavy, wrought-iron security gates, her knuckles turning bone-white against the dark metal bars. Behind her on the public street sat a massive, fully loaded moving van, idling with a low, oppressive hum.

Chloe had spent the last three years maxing out credit cards, purchasing a multi-million-dollar Bel-Air mansion she could never genuinely afford, and leasing a fleet of luxury vehicles under the arrogant assumption that Evelyn’s bottomless trust fund would always step in to foot the bill.

But yesterday, reality had finally caught up. The bank foreclosed on Chloe's vanity estate.

Convinced that showing up unannounced with a fully packed moving van would force her wealthy mother-in-law to unlock the gates and capitulate, Chloe expected her loud, aggressive tantrums and her husband's pathetic pleading to easily manipulate the older woman into funding their lavish lifestyle once more.

Standing outside the imposing barriers, violently shaking the bars, was a woman who had finally run out of runway. The same designer coat. The same sense of unearned entitlement. The only difference was that this time, the brick wall she had hit wasn't moving.

"Open the gates, Evelyn!" Chloe shrieked, her expensive diamond tennis bracelets clinking sharply against the iron. "Your son is standing out here in the blistering heat! Your grandchildren have nowhere to sleep tonight! How can you be so utterly cold-blooded?!"
