The rain over Oakhaven smelled of salt pine, rusting iron, and wet asphalt. I had driven two hours down the coastal highway from my workshop in Tacoma to bid on reclaimed cedar beams at the annual county surplus auction. The auction was held in the damp, sprawling basement of the old Port Authority building, a cavernous place where local maritime history went to be sold off in tagged lots.
Rainwater dripped steadily into plastic buckets spaced along the concrete floor. The air was cold enough that my breath curled faint gray plumes above my collar. I carried a metal clipboard in one hand and a thermos of lukewarm black coffee in the other, flipping through lot descriptions for vintage hand-milled lumber.
