The Ironwood Tide

Fictional story. Contains depictions of institutional misconduct, juvenile endangerment, and emotional trauma.Chapter 1: The Harbor Fog
The damp twilight of Cape Alder, Oregon, smelled of creosote, diesel fuel, and salt. Thick ocean fog rolled off the Pacific, smothering the wooden piers of the inlet and turning the navigation lamps into hazy yellow smudges. Inside his shoreline repair shed, Julian Vance wiped grease from his knuckles with a rag that had seen better years.
For three winters, the quiet of the harbor had been Julian’s solitary sanctuary. Ever since his younger brother, Leo, perished in an engine room explosion aboard an uninspected commercial tugboat, Julian had withdrawn from the world. He kept his head down, repaired diesel generators for local fishermen, and avoided the wealthy estate owners who lived along the cliffs above the bay. Grief had turned his days into a mechanical routine of socket wrenches and engine oil, leaving no room for uninvited trouble.
