Chapter 1: The Cold Annex

The gale had been battering the slate roof of the Ironwood Maritime Archive since noon, but inside the cold stone annex, the air was thick with the smell of wet mortar, aged pine, and damp eighteenth-century paper. I stood on the granite floor with a thick linen cloth pressed against a seam in the leaking skylight, trying desperately to shield a stack of rare nautical charts from the encroaching storm. Water was already dripping steadily down the mortar wall, pooling near the legs of the heavy mahogany storage chests.

Across the courtyard, the main pavilion burned with warm, golden light. Champagne flutes clinked behind high arched windows, low laughter echoed off polished cedar beams, and prospective venture partners admired the historic coastal property I had spent three tedious years restoring. Tonight was supposed to be the inaugural preview of the archive, a celebration of coastal heritage that I had poured my heart into.
