The master suite at Blackwood Estate was so quiet that Clara could hear the camera in her phone correcting its focus. Her father, Richard Blackwood, stood in the doorway with one hand against the frame. On the bed, his wife Elena and his younger brother Marcus stared back at him, unable to explain away the scene.
Clara did not move closer. For five years she had allowed Elena to call her reckless, jealous, and unstable while she copied invoices, photographed prescription bottles, and saved messages that appeared and vanished from the family cloud account. The recording in her hand was only the final piece, not the entire case.
Richard placed a red folder on the dresser. It contained a preliminary report from an outside forensic accountant showing that charitable grants had been routed through consulting companies connected to Marcus. The findings were not yet a judgment, but they were serious enough for the foundation's independent directors to begin a formal inquiry.
Richard told Elena and Marcus to leave the private wing and wait for their lawyers. Estate security escorted them to separate guest rooms while counsel arranged a temporary no-contact agreement. He did not seize their property or declare them guilty. Instead, he preserved the room, the devices, and the documents for investigators who could establish what had actually happened.
When the door closed, Richard looked at Clara as if she had become a stranger. She told him the affair was only the visible wound. The larger danger was hidden in his medication records and the foundation's accounts. If he wanted the truth, she said, he would have to hear facts that injured his pride as much as Elena's betrayal injured his heart.
