Chapter 1: The Tide at Blackwood Neck

Julian drove the heavy pickup onto the gravel causeway just as the ocean began to lick at the tire rims. To our left, the waters of Penobscot Bay glinted like hammered lead under the heavy autumn sky. To our right, Blackwood Islet rose from the gray froth—a solitary spine of granite, stunted pines, and weather-beaten timber buildings. The weather radio on the dashboard had been crackling warnings about an incoming storm surge all morning, but Julian had switched it off an hour outside of town, insisting that a quiet weekend without static was exactly what our marriage needed to heal.

“No client phone calls,” he said, keeping a light, relaxed grip on the steering wheel as the truck bounced across the wet rocks. “No corporate auditors. No real estate lawyers. Just three days at the old tide mill so we can remember why we started all this.” He glanced at me with a practiced smile, the very same expression he used when pitching historic waterfront redevelopments to hesitant city planning councils. I looked at his clean profile and felt a familiar, hollow ache. Four months earlier, I would have clung to that promise with desperate hope. But that was before I discovered the ledger entries for a secret offshore holding account, and before I noticed how often Genevieve Royce, his principal investment partner, stayed late at his downtown office.
