Chapter 1: The Mountain Express

The low whistle of the Northern Sentinel echoed off the granite walls of the Cascade Gorge, drowned almost instantly by the howl of a winter blizzard. Inside the first-class observation car, the air smelled of aged mahogany, warm wool, and the crisp tang of ozone from the overworked electric heaters. Snow slammed against the double-paned glass in relentless sheets, reducing the evening landscape to a blur of white and shadow.

Clara Sterling sat near the center aisle, her hands resting tightly on the leather binding of an old archival folder. She was thirty-two, though the past six months had left a quiet tiredness around her eyes that made her feel decades older. She had been granted this long-distance ticket through a memorial foundation scholarship created in memory of her younger brother, Julian. He had been a brilliant structural draftsman who died half a year ago in a sudden industrial collapse at a timber freight depot in Oregon. The official report called it an unpredictable structural fault, but Clara had spent every waking hour struggling to reconcile that cold sentence with the meticulous brother she had known.
