Chapter 1: The Orchard Frost

The late November wind swept down from the Green Mountains, rattling the storm windows of the old Miller homestead. Outside, forty acres of heirloom apple trees stood dark against the twilight sky. Inside the ground-floor nursery, thirty-two-year-old Laurel Miller checked the digital gauge on her younger brother Toby’s specialized climate bed. Twelve-year-old Toby had been born with severe osteogenesis imperfecta and acute respiratory weakness, leaving his bones fragile and his lungs reliant on a continuous low-flow oxygen concentrator and steady room temperatures. Since their parents died in a car accident two years ago, Laurel had managed the orchard estate alone, working remotely as an architectural draftsman to remain Toby’s full-time guardian.

That peace frayed when Uncle Garrett arrived unannounced at the front porch. Garrett was their late father’s estranged older brother, a slick real estate speculator from Boston whose expensive suits looked out of place among the weathered timber of Timber Ridge. He brought along his twenty-four-year-old son, Mason, an aspiring video creator who walked through the historic house holding a camera rig, narrating mock-renovation ideas to his social media followers. Garrett claimed they had come to offer family solidarity and assist with winter preparations, but Laurel noted how his eyes lingered on the home’s original woodwork and the framed land grant hanging in the study.
