Chapter 1: The Red Handprint

The Harrington estate in Greenwich, Connecticut, was built to make disorder feel impossible. Stone walls, polished wood, and guarded gates protected a family whose name appeared on towers and charitable foundations. Yet on a Tuesday evening, the calm of the living room broke beneath Eleanor Harrington's accusation: the Cartier diamond necklace inherited from her grandmother had vanished from the vanity safe.

Sarah Cole, the thirty-two-year-old housekeeper, knelt beside the Persian rug with a red mark rising across her cheek. Eleanor had struck her moments earlier, after an empty crimson jewelry box was found beneath the mattress in Sarah's small staff room. Sarah denied taking the necklace and begged Eleanor to search her bag, her car, and every place she had been that day.

Six-year-old Maya clung to her mother's uniform, frightened by voices she could not understand. Sarah wrapped an arm around the child and tried to remain steady. She needed the job and its health coverage, but she also understood that Eleanor had already decided what kind of person a struggling single mother must be.

Near the fireplace stood Eleanor's son, Preston. At twenty-six, he had inherited every advantage except restraint. He advised his mother to call the police and spoke about Sarah's background as if poverty itself were evidence. The calmness in his voice sounded compassionate, but the smallest smile at the corner of his mouth told another story.

Eleanor reached for the telephone. Sarah asked Preston to tell the truth about her years of reliable work, but he looked down at her and said he knew only that she had betrayed the family. As Eleanor began dialing, the estate's security tablet chimed on the coffee table.
