Prologue: The Sound in the Dark

Daniel pushed open the nursery door, expecting the quiet, peaceful sanctuary of a home winding down for the night.

Instead, the sight before him made the blood in his veins turn to ice.

A terrified scream shattered the suburban silence.

"You’re going to pay for this!"

His mother stood over his exhausted, trembling wife, gripping her by the hair and violently slamming her head against the solid wooden railing of the crib.

Once.

Twice.

Again and again.

Inside the crib, their newborn baby cried in pure terror, tiny hands reaching out from beneath a star-patterned blanket as if begging someone to make the nightmare stop.

For one paralyzed heartbeat, Daniel stood frozen in the doorway.

He couldn’t move. He couldn’t breathe. Hot tears of absolute shock rolled down his reddened cheeks as he stared at the horrifying scene unfolding inside his own home.

The woman who had raised him...

Was the exact same woman brutalizing the family he had sworn to protect.

Then, the shock vanished. And something far more dangerous took its place.

Fury.

A primal, protective instinct exploded inside him. Without a single second of hesitation, his massive frame crossed the room in a blur. With one powerful, explosive shove, he forced his mother away from his wife, sending her crashing hard against the heavy mahogany wardrobe.

The impact rattled the room.

Emily collapsed onto the carpet, trembling and sobbing uncontrollably, her arms wrapped tightly around herself and the baby.

Daniel stepped immediately between them.

A human shield. A wall no one could ever break through again.

Behind him lay the crib, his terrified child, and his wounded wife. In front of him stood the woman who had just shattered everything he thought he knew about the word family.

His chest rose and fell in ragged breaths. His fists were clenched so tight his knuckles turned white. His jaw locked like a vise. And in his eyes burned a pain so deep it bordered on pure hatred.

In that defining moment, he was no longer just a son.

He was a husband. A father. And he would burn the world to the ground before letting anyone hurt them again.
