Chapter 1: The Sanctuary on the Sound

Rain came off the Sound in long, gray sheets that blurred the pine bluffs of Orcas Island into shadows. Clara Croft pulled her worn canvas coat tighter around her shoulders as she carried her leather tool satchel up the granite steps of Vance Manor. In her inner pocket rested a folded paper invoice from the pediatric clinic in Tacoma: three thousand dollars past due for her seven-year-old daughter Maya’s custom orthopedic leg brace. Paper restoration did not pay quickly, but when an emergency call came from the estate’s business manager offering double her usual fee to catalogue a damaged maritime collection, Clara had caught the morning ferry without hesitation.

The front door opened before she could knock. Silas Thorne stood in the entry, a tall man with hollow cheeks and a dark wool suit that looked tailored for a colder climate. He did not offer a greeting. Instead, his eyes swept over Clara’s damp boots and the brass clips of her restoration kit.
