Chapter 1: The Quiet Harbor

The salt mist hung thick over the granite piers of Blackwood Bay when Marcus Vance cut the engine of his mud-splattered pickup truck. For seven grueling months on a North Pacific salvage barge, the smell of diesel oil, wet iron, and freezing ocean spray had been his entire universe. Every night inside his cramped steel berth, he had kept his mind anchored to a single vision: the warm yellow light of the coastal timber workshop, the scent of cedar shavings, and Clara’s steady laugh welcoming him back to the shoreline.

But as he stepped onto the gravel driveway, an unfamiliar tension settled between his shoulders. The cedar-shingled archive studio stood high against the bluffs, its weathered walls unchanged at first glance, yet subtle alterations disturbed the sanctuary he remembered. The brass latch on the outer gate had been replaced by a heavy keypad deadbolt. A polished commercial sign for "Cross Heritage Real Estate Development" was bolted to the oak doorpost where Clara’s hand-painted sign used to hang.
