Chapter 1: The Fog over Port Mercer

Ocean fog settled thick across the harbor of Port Mercer, turning the gas lamps along the timber wharves into blurry orange halos. Inside the ground-floor workshop of Vance Nautical Instruments, the air smelled of machine oil, beeswax, polished cedar, and vintage brass. Julian Vance sat at his main worktable, adjusting the micro-vernier gear of an old ship chronometer with steady, calloused hands.

At fifty-two, Julian was a man defined by measurement and silence. He spent his days restoring soundings compasses, octants, and tide gauges for fishing crews and merchant vessels that braved the cold waters of northern Maine. The shop was quiet except for the rhythmic ticking of pendulum clocks lining the pine shelves.
