Chapter 1: The Midnight Notice

The workshop smelled of aged white oak, linseed oil, and the cold salt brine of the Maine coast drifting through open transom windows. Nora Vance stood at her wide pine drafting table, her calloused fingers tracing the faint copperplate ink of an 1870 nautical chart. Outside, twilight was settling over Harbor Point, turning the slate waters of the bay into a dark, mirror-like grey. She had spent five years in this building, restoring maritime maps, carved vessel figureheads, and historic ship timber, brick by brick and beam by beam.

Across the weathered floorboards stood Julian Sterling. Impeccably dressed in a tailored charcoal wool overcoat that looked absurdly pristine among the copper chisels and wood shavings, Julian exuded the quiet arrogance of a man who believed every door in the state had a price tag. Beside him stood his corporate legal counsel, a sharp-featured woman carrying a thick legal dossier bound in heavy cardstock and tied with red linen tape.
