Chapter 1: The Sanctuary at Blackwood Cove

Clara Vance spent four long years in Europe completing her Master Timber Restorer apprenticeship before returning to her hometown of Blackwood Cove, Maine. She had come back with calloused hands, a deep reverence for old-growth wood, and a clear vision for the town’s abandoned 1880s maritime chapel. Perched on a granite cliff overlooking the Atlantic, the historic building had stood weathered and forgotten for decades. To Clara, it was an architectural treasure of mortise-and-tenon craftsmanship. To her uncle, Arthur Vance, it was simply two acres of prime oceanfront real estate waiting to be cleared for luxury high-rise condominiums.

Arthur Vance was the managing director of Vance Holdings, a commercial development firm built on aggressive land acquisitions and rapid construction. His son, Julian, worked as his director of public relations, a young man whose primary skill lay in polishing his father’s corporate image while mocking anyone who worked with their hands. For years, Arthur had dismissed Clara’s specialized preservation degree as an expensive, impractical hobby. When Clara successfully secured a competitive state heritage grant to restore the chapel into a public community hall, Arthur treated her victory like a personal insult.
