Chapter One: Another Version of Himself on the Street

On a giant billboard, Manhattan’s most famous philanthropist, Susanna Foster, smiled while holding a disadvantaged child and proclaimed to the entire city:

“Every child deserves to be seen.”

Yet beneath the billboard’s shadow, a barefoot homeless boy slowly raised his head. Adam, standing beside Susanna, stopped without warning. The homeless boy had his face. The same eyes. The same brow. The same slightly upturned corners of the mouth. Even the nearly invisible beauty mark beneath the left eye was identical.

Adam instinctively touched his own face. “Mom... why does he look exactly like me?”

Susanna followed her son’s gaze. In the next second, every trace of color drained from her face. Her expensive sunglasses slid from her nose, struck the stone steps and shattered. The homeless boy slowly stood. He did not beg Susanna for money, and he did not call her Mother. He simply moved past her and held out a rusted metal locket to Adam.

With trembling hands, Adam opened it. Two faded baby photographs sat side by side. The infants wore identical blue hospital bands, and their birth dates were exactly the same. Beneath them, time had nearly erased an engraved line:

“To Our Twin Sons.”

Adam spun toward his mother. “Why are there two babies? Who is the other one?”

The homeless boy finally spoke. His voice was quiet, yet it made Susanna collapse onto the pavement:

“The other one is the son she left behind to die ten years ago.”
