Chapter 1: The Crate from Penobscot

The freight haul truck pulled up outside Hannah Vance’s woodworking shop at ten in the morning, its diesel exhaust mixing with the damp Atlantic fog drifting off Penobscot Bay. Hannah had just finished wiping linseed oil off a restored oak mantle when the driver hauled a heavy, timber-slatted crate onto her loading dock.

"Freight charges due on receipt," the driver said, tapping a digital clipboard against his rain-slicked jacket. "Shipped from a marine salvage yard down in Portland, flagged as priority hold."
