Chapter 1: The Lapel Pin

The morning sun over Salem Harbor was muted by a low bank of silver fog that smelled of wet slate, brine, and coal smoke. At precisely seven-thirty, Clara Vance walked through the heavy oak doors of the Salem Maritime Heritage Trust. She wore a simple navy linen work smock over her trousers, her dark hair pinned into a disciplined bun. In her canvas bag were her intake forms, a modest brass pocket scale, and a clean notebook. She looked like any other thirty-two-year-old junior cataloging assistant reporting for her first week of temporary employment.

Except for the small gold emblem pinned to her left lapel.
