Chapter 1: The Glass Atrium

The receptionist at Vance & Cross Architectural Design gave me a pleasant, practiced smile that did not reach his eyes. It was the polished front-desk manner of a man who had never seen me before, even though my grandfather’s original timber T-square still hung behind the brass plaque in the main gallery. The lobby smelled of polished terrazzo, roasted espresso, and wet coats beneath floor-to-ceiling glass walls overlooking downtown Seattle. My leather drafting case felt heavy against my shoulder, its strap dark with rain from the walk across the plaza. I had taken an early morning flight from the coast after finishing the final structural stress tests on the Columbia River Estuary Bridge three weeks ahead of schedule. I had not called my husband, Julian, because I wanted to surprise him in the office we had built together over fifteen years of shared blueprints and municipal reviews.

"May I ask who you are visiting today, ma'am?" the young receptionist asked, his fingers hovering over a digital guest ledger. "Mr. Cross is in an executive briefing, but I can check if his assistant has an open window later this afternoon."
