Chapter 1: The Rising Water

The roar of the Blackwood River was a sound I had lived beside for three years without truly fearing it. It was the background hum of our quiet valley life, a steady cadence that lulled our children to sleep in our rented timber cottage. But on that freezing November night, after thirty-six hours of unyielding rain from the Pacific storm front, the hum turned into a terrifying, guttural thrum. It was a sound that vibrated through the floorboards before the water even breached the porch sill.

I woke at two in the morning to the distinct smell of wet silt and dead autumn leaves inside the hallway. My husband, David, was already out of bed, his flashlight beam cutting through the damp darkness. When he pulled open the basement door, the reflection of black water swirled just three steps below us. The earthen dike upriver had given way. There was no time to pack photo albums or search for misplaced trinkets. We had less than ten minutes before the lower valley road would be entirely impassable.
