Chapter 1: The Gilded Fall

The first thing I saw wasn't my daughter.

It was her blood.

It streaked the white tablecloth at table four of the Whitmore charity gala, bright beneath the ballroom chandeliers. Brianna was on the marble floor, one hand pressed to her temple while my brother Richard stood over her with the same cold expression he wore in board meetings.

For years, Richard had treated the Whitmore name like a weapon. He controlled the family company, the household accounts, and every conversation in which my daughter tried to tell the truth. That night he had learned she possessed copies of the ledgers proving he had stolen from the family foundation.

"Give me the drive," he said.

Brianna shook her head. "It already uploaded."

Richard reached for her again. I crossed the ballroom before he could touch her.

"Step away from my daughter."

The guests fell silent. Richard turned toward me with a smile built from thirty years of entitlement.

"This is family business, Daniel."

"No," I said. "This is assault."
