Chapter 1: The Midnight Siren

Dense coastal fog hung heavy over Blackwood Cove, wrapping the weather-beaten cedar shakes of the old maritime shipyard in a cold damp shroud. Inside the second-floor drafting loft, Nora Vance adjusted her desk lamp, tracing the faded ink of an 1880s hull schematic. Outside, the tide crashed against the granite sea wall with rhythmic force, but the stillness inside the ancient timber hall was absolute—until the first beam cracked.

It was not the gentle groan of seasonal settling. It was a sharp, explosive violence that reverberated through the iron floor bolts and vibrated straight into Nora’s soles. She sprang up from her stool, her hand immediately reaching for her flashlight. Beside her, her young assistant, Hannah, startled awake from a bench near the blueprint flat-files, eyes wide with sudden fear.
