Salvage and Silence
When Julian Mercer returns to his family's maritime repair yard in coastal Oregon, he finds his teenage son frightened and silent. A sudden dockside accident leads Julian to a hidden ledger, exposing industrial sabotage and a deep betrayal.
Fictional story. Contains themes of domestic tension, emotional coercion, and industrial sabotage.Chapter 1: Salt and Iron
Julian Mercer pulled his rusted pickup into the gravel lot of Mercer Marine Repair just as dawn began to bleed gray across Cape Sentinel, Oregon. Rain rattled against the corrugated tin roof of the main workshop, carrying the sharp scent of diesel, wet hemlock, and Pacific salt. It was five in the morning, and the coastal harbor was wrapped in a low, heavy fog that muffled the mournful whistle of the bell buoy out on the shoal. Julian sat in the cold cab for a long minute, his hands resting on the steering wheel, listening to the rhythmic ping of cooling iron under the hood.
For seven long months, Julian had taken high-paying contract welding jobs on offshore tugs near Coos Bay. The money was necessary to clear the mountain of debt that remained after his wife, Hannah, died of illness two winters ago. In his absence, Julian had entrusted both the salvage yard and his fourteen-year-old son, Caleb, to his elder brother, Gareth. Gareth was a sharp, pragmatic businessman who had stepped in with easy promises of structure, meals, and supervision. But returning home had not felt like a reunion. It felt like walking into a house where all the lamps had been lowered to a dim flicker.
