The Rimrock Eagle
When a sullen teenager is sent to his grandfather's remote Texas ranch, the discovery of a trapped golden eagle forces them to work together against environmental elements and a corrupt land inspector.
Fictional story. Contains mild themes of family strain, animal injury, land disputes, and legal tension.Chapter 1: The Broken Telegraph Line
Heat rose from the Caprock Escarpment in shivering waves, bleaching the red clay of the gulch until the earth looked like dry brick. Eli Vance kept his left boot firmly on the brake pedal of the '84 Ford truck, listening to the dry rattle of the fan belt. Beside him, his fifteen-year-old grandson Caleb stared out the passenger window, clutching a scuffed mechanical camera like a shield. Three weeks into his court-ordered summer stay on the Texas mesa, the boy had mastered the art of total silence. He didn't complain about the well water that tasted of iron, nor the absence of cell service. He simply existed in Eli’s small corrugated ranch house like a ghost who took his meals at six.
"Windmill's throwing a vibration," Eli said, pointing toward the rusted tail vane silhouetted against the blinding midday sky. "We need to clear the upper turnbuckle before the afternoon storm hits."
