Chapter 1: The Glasshouse Threshold

The sea air carried the bitter smell of damp cedar and engine exhaust when the utility wagon pulled into the gravel drive of Oakhaven Nursery. Clara Vance rested her forehead against the passenger window, every jolt of the tires sending a sharp ache through her fractured collarbone and the thick fiberglass splint bound around her left forearm. It had been sixteen hours since the central arch of the Victorian glasshouse collapsed onto her workbench, pinning her under iron frames and shattered glass.

The hospital discharge paper sat folded on her lap, signed by an attending physician who had explicitly warned her brother that Clara required bed rest, strict immobility for her arm, and immediate access to her prescribed anti-inflammatory drugs. Julian had nodded politely at the nurse, smiling with the calm reassurance that had earned him the chairmanship of the local merchant board.
