Maya Cole watched six hundred guests admire the Aurora smart mirror at Veyron Glass’s launch gala. The mirror adjusted lighting, displayed schedules and made every face look gently rested. Beside her, chief executive Julian Veyron—her fiancé—promised that ten thousand units would ship to hotels within a month.
Maya had led the battery-safety team. Her final report recommended delaying shipment after two prototypes overheated inside humid bathrooms. Yet the approval slide on the ballroom screen carried her electronic signature and the word Passed.
She opened the demonstration unit’s diagnostic menu. Temperature warnings had been disabled, and the serial number belonged to a hand-built model with a larger ventilation gap than the production design. Julian whispered that they would discuss it after the gala. Maya asked whether any production units were already installed. His silence gave the answer.
