"You don't belong here."
The words were spat with a venomous, self-satisfied chuckle that barely carried over the thumping, earth-shaking bass vibrating through the exclusive, neon-lit VIP lounge of Aether, Manhattan’s most notoriously selective nightclub. The air inside the private enclave was thick with the scent of expensive cologne, dry ice, and unbridled arrogance.
"She is the absolute owner of this club, babe! Didn't you know?" The arrogant real estate heir, Chad Harrington, laughed cruelly as he tilted a freshly popped, three-thousand-dollar bottle of Ace of Spades champagne upside down, pouring the sparkling, sticky liquid directly over the quiet woman's head.
Chad thought it was absolutely hilarious to publicly humiliate someone he assumed was just a lowly, uninvited guest who had somehow managed to sneak past the burly velvet-rope security into the ultra-luxury tier. His snobby, designer-clad girlfriend, Tiffany, let out a piercing, high-pitched laugh, fully supporting the vicious bullying. She snapped a video of the spectacle on her diamond-encrusted iPhone, completely confident that their families' vast Manhattan wealth made them entirely untouchable in this luxurious environment.
Standing soaking wet in the exact middle of the crowded VIP section, dripping from head to toe in expensive champagne, was a woman who had remained completely, unnaturally silent. The same pulsing neon lights painted her wet face in shades of electric blue and hot pink. The same luxurious atmosphere surrounded her.
The only difference in this room was the name legally listed on the property deed.
Chad and Tiffany stood arrogantly in their matching designer clothes, blinded by their toxic egos, feeling incredibly powerful as the surrounding high-society onlookers snickered. They believed they were the rulers of the night.
The other woman, whose name was Clara Vance, simply stared coldly through the liquid dripping from her eyelashes. She didn't scream. She didn't cry. She stood perfectly still, waiting patiently for her executive security staff to arrive from the main office downstairs.
Chad didn't expect the club's general manager, a formidable and usually unflappable man named Marcus, to suddenly sprint across the room from the private VIP entrance.
Instead of throwing the wet, ruined woman out into the cold New York rain as Chad expected, the trust-fund heir's arrogant supremacy shattered instantly. Without a single word of warning, Marcus lunged forward and violently punched Chad squarely in the face.
