Harmonic Silence at Blacktail

High in the Colorado Rockies, acoustic telemetry analyst Nora Croft detects subterranean fracture signals beneath a key rail bypass tunnel. When corporate leadership ignores her warnings during a severe storm, Nora must draw on her late mother's seismic research to stop an impending disaster.

Fictional story. Depicts high-altitude industrial weather hazards, emergency response telemetry, and high-stress alpine operations.

Chapter 1: The Echo in the Granite

The first time Director Harrison Thorne called my data worthless, I did not argue. I simply adjusted the frequency gain on the seismic telemetry console and watched the green wave flatten across the glass monitor. It was not out of fear or deference. Silence had been my sanctuary long before I ever took the night shift at the Blacktail Pass Subterranean Monitoring Station.

The control room high in the Colorado Rockies smelled of ozone, scorched circuit boards, stale chicory coffee, and damp wool. Outside the reinforced windows, an early November tempest slammed against the granite cliffs, whipping fine ice against the glass with the steady, dry click of throwing gravel. Radios hummed along the back wall, carrying the static chatter of regional snowplows struggling to keep the high-altitude rail lines open.
