Frost on the Timber
A retired surveyor responds to a midnight emergency call in sub-zero Idaho, discovering his nephew locked in a frozen utility cabin while his family pursues luxury elsewhere.
Fictional story. Depicts child neglect, extreme weather distress, and family legal conflict. Reader discretion is advised.Chapter 1: The Midnight Signal
At 2:15 a.m., the sharp chime of my emergency radio handset cut through the heavy silence of my cabin. Outside, the Idaho pine trees groaned under the weight of an early December freeze, their branches snapping like dry bones as a severe mountain downdraft swept down Boundary Ridge. The digital thermometer mounted outside my kitchen window read fourteen degrees below zero.
I reached for the handset expecting a municipal emergency alert or a fallen timber notification from the county road crew. Instead, a frail, trembling voice came through the speaker, barely louder than the hum of the oil heater in the hallway.
