Chapter 1: The Frost on the Glass

The pediatric ward on the fourth floor of St. Jude’s Hospital in Duluth smelled of floor wax, industrial disinfectant, and the sharp bite of ozone from the air filters. Outside the triple-paned windows, a November gale whipped white froth across the iron-gray expanse of Lake Superior, driving sleet against the brick facade. Inside, the rhythmic chimes of the pulse oximeter provided the only steady rhythm in a night that had felt endless.

I sat in the high-backed vinyl armchair beside the bed, my thumbs rubbing the calloused palm of my right hand. Under the thin cotton blanket lay my fifteen-year-old brother, Jonah. His face was pale beneath the dim nightlight, but his breathing had finally eased, the harsh wheezing of acute pneumonia subdued by the nebulizer treatments that had consumed the last forty-eight hours.
